Wireless, Secure, and Strong: The PDK System at Florida Atlantic Coast Treatment Solutions

Florida Atlantic Coast Treatment Solutions (FACTS) is a rehabilitation facility providing an evidence-based and individualized program of addiction and mental health recovery plans. Like many specialized treatment centers, FACTS balances critical care with strict operational and security requirements. Maintaining secure access to sensitive areas is critical to protecting both patients and employees. At the same time, the organization needed a system that would be simple for staff to manage without creating unnecessary complexity in day-to-day operations.

To accomplish this, FACTS partnered with RV Communications, a Florida-based security integrator, who introduced them to ProdataKey (PDK). After evaluating the facility’s needs, the team at RV Communications recognized that FACTS would benefit greatly from PDK’s Red™ Wireless Locksets and cloud-based solutions. The result was a modern, mobile-first access control solution that gives FACTS greater visibility into who can access different areas of the facility, streamlines credential management for employees, and improves overall operational efficiency.

Securing the Facility with Red™ Wireless Locksets

The primary hardware that FACTS relies on for secure access throughout their facility is the Red Wireless Cylindrical Lock—a sleek wireless lock built especially for commercial applications. “Our pharmacy is the most important thing we have controlled access to,” explains John Hilton, Maintenance and Environmental Director at FACTS. “We also have PDK controlling a few different parts of the building, like our main entrance and the wing that contains our gym.”

By securing these critical entry points with PDK’s wireless locking technology, FACTS can maintain tighter control over who enters sensitive areas while ensuring that staff can move efficiently throughout the facility. And because of their wireless nature, the Red Cylindrical Locks allowed the team at RV Communications to set up the necessary PDK hardware without any overly complicated or costly infrastructure upgrades—no need to spend the time or money pulling excessive wire.

One of the primary goals for FACTS was simplifying the management of access permissions and credentials. The organization needed a system that allowed administrators to add or remove credentials efficiently while maintaining strong security controls. And with ProdataKey’s cloud-managed Red Wireless Lockets, FACTS gained a flexible and intuitive access control solution that made employee access management significantly easier.

“Getting new employees into the system and setting them up with a PIN to use at each lock has been so easy,” reflects John. “And then removing people’s access to the locks has been easy too. We’ve had to take a couple people off the system so far, and I can just go in and delete them in just a few seconds.” With PDK’s handy cloud-managed platform, staff members can quickly receive and activate their access credentials, and administrators such as John can instantly revoke permissions when necessary.

Protecting Critical Spaces Throughout the Rehab Facility

Security requirements within a rehabilitation facility are more complex than in a traditional business environment. Staff members often require access to different areas depending on their unique responsibilities, and sensitive spaces such as pharmacies must remain tightly controlled.  Therefore, using ProdataKey’s cloud-based platform, FACTS established distinct access groups that aligned with employee roles and operational requirements.

some employees have access to the pharmacy, others have access to the entrance

“For example, we have to make sure that not everybody has access to the pharmacy,” John explains. “So we have it set up to allow some of the nurses and other authorized staff to get access to the pharmacy. Then we have another restricted access group where they just have access to the front door and the wing where the gym is located.” This level of control gives FACTS the ability to better manage security without creating unnecessary barriers for employees.

The treatment center’s PDK system also improves incident awareness by providing immediate alerts whenever unauthorized access attempts occurred. “If somebody tries to access one of the wireless locks on the pharmacy and they don't have an authorized credential, ProdataKey sends an alert to the staff informing them that someone is trying to get access to that door,” said Pete Ugarte, Owner of RV Communications. For a rehabilitation facility where safety and accountability are essential, these alerts provide an additional layer of confidence.

A Mobile-First Experience for Florida Atlantic Coast Treatment Solutions

One of the most impactful aspects of the ProdataKey solution for FACTS is the system’s mobile-first design. Instead of relying exclusively on traditional access cards or physical credentials, employees can use their smartphones to access authorized areas throughout the facility via the PDK Access app.

This means that employees no longer need to carry multiple credentials or worry about misplaced access cards. At the same time, administrators can issue or revoke mobile credentials remotely, eliminating delays associated with replacing physical keys or badges.

The mobile experience has significantly improved convenience for staff members who regularly move between different parts of the facility during busy workdays. “It's so nice that you don't even have to have the app pulled up on your phone. Once you have it downloaded on your phone, I can just put my phone to the reader and it will work,” says John.

Mobile credentials not only introduce a convenient way of gaining access to a space, but it empowers the facility to more effectively control patient movement and access.“In some areas of our facility, you have to use a phone,” John explains. “For example, our main entrance is really an area meant for coming in, not going. We don’t want patients getting out that way. So in order to leave out the front door, you have to use the push-to-open function in the app—there’s not even a reader at the door.”

Together, these mobile-first capabilities have helped FACTS create a more secure and streamlined environment for both staff and patients, while also reducing reliance on traditional keys, cards, and manual processes.

Troubleshooting Made Easy

In addition to improving security and convenience, the ProdataKey system has significantly reduced the amount of time and effort required to troubleshoot access control issues. According to Pete and the RV Communications team, the PDK system has proven highly dependable—and in the rare event that a problem does occur, the PDK.io System Health functionality has allowed them to quickly identify and resolve issues remotely.

“There are rarely ever hardware mechanical issues—most of the time if there is a problem, I can just jump on PDK.io and fix it, or at least understand right away what the problem is."

Pete Ugarte, Owner of RV Communications

This remote troubleshooting capability significantly reduces downtime and eliminates the need for frequent onsite service visits.

The team at FACTS has also benefited from the ability to manage daily access control operations remotely through mobile devices. Whether granting temporary access to an employee, unlocking a door, or making changes while away from the facility, John and other administrators can handle tasks quickly and efficiently. “It’s nice to be able to manage the system remotely. Whenever I’m not around, I can still grant access and open doors just using my phone. It’s so nice!” John reflects.
